After digitising three diverse collections for the University of Salford – Alexandra Mitchell tells us about their exciting plans for an accessible future!
TownsWeb were incredibly responsive to our short timescale to digitise a set of photographs for a live student project, even working late into the evening to ensure that the students would get them in time. Their work enabled the students to curate an exhibition for their assessment deadline. Townsweb work was professional and of high quality, and their customer service continues to be excellent.
Counter deterioration, damage and loss with robust digital duplicates
Maintain reputation and integrity stylistically and guard against infringements
Innovate to attract new online audiences and reconnect with existing ones
Harness the value of digitised material to create robust, educational resources
The access and research of academic archives must always be weighed against the vulnerable nature of physical heritage items, presenting a real dilemma for collection holders. Creating digital replicas of physical archive material overcomes barriers to access and removes the risks associated with physical handling. Digitisation enables archive content to be used for powerful and engaging digital storytelling and the creation of valuable educational resources.
