Our Work > The Royal Dragoon Guards

The Royal Dragoon Guards is an Armoured Cavalry Regiment of the British Army. Formed In 1992 its recent history includes Operations in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. Before its formation the Regiment shared the combined heritage of six Cavalry Regiments. The founding four Regiments, the 4th Dragoon Guards, 5th Dragoon Guards, 7th Dragoon Guards and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons were raised between 1685 and 1689. These Regiments saw action in almost every significant conflict since their formation, through to their amalgamations in 1922. Following which The 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards would inherit their legacy and invest in their futures throughout WWII, Korea and the Cold War. This historical legacy continues to inform, inspire and underpin the ethos of the men and women that serve in The Royal Dragoon Guards.

The development of the website in partnership with Townsweb had a number of aims. The primary one being the provision of free access to our increasingly digitised archive. The digitisation was driven by a need to preserve our rich and diverse archive for future access and to provide business continuity in the event of catastrophe. By hosting the archive online, we can resource our museum staff and volunteers in their work, providing a time capsule for those that have served in support of their wellbeing. Equally, we can support those from outside the regiment with educational, ancestral and historical enquiries.
Throughout this partnership Townswebs expertise and experience has been invaluable. Providing innovative, flexible and empathetic solutions to our needs. The outcome of which is our exciting, educational Site. That sustains our heritage, promotes our ethos, while continuing to inform and inspire the men and women that serve today.
Graeme Green – Regimental Secretary
